Staying Cool in Cameron
The Cameron Highlands is a highland area in Malaysia, a few hours away from Kuala Lumpur. It is a cool and refreshing change of climate compared to the rest of tropical Malaysia. It is a popular holiday destination for local Malaysians looking to beat the heat but foreign tourists too can have a pleasant respite from the humidity. Cameron Highlands is named after William Cameron who came across the plateau in the hills while mapping Malaysia in colonial times. The British developed it as a retreat for officers stationed in Malaysia. Later, it was recognized as an ideal tea plantation area. The Boh Tea Plantation was the first plantation and is still in existence today. The highlands were used as a retreat and for farming. The area is dotted with colonial buildings and retains the old world charm of a bygone era. It also grows strawberries and other fruits and vegetables which would not be found in the rest of Malaysia.
Cameron Highlands is a largish area containing several small towns. The two main towns in the Cameron Highlands are Brinchang and Tanah Rata. Tanah Rata is the administrative Headquarters of the Highland area and is probably the only place you can stay or move around without access to a vehicle. There are some great walking trails around here, many of which are suitable for even beginners to attempt. It is easy to find tour agencies here to take you around as part of a tour or to go to the beautiful and dense jungle area near Brinchang, especially the Brinchang peak which is the highest point.
It has some spectacular sun rise views and later during the day, the clouds descend around the point and it's easy to pretend that you're walking in the sky. If you're in luck and it's the right time of the year, you could see the Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world. Special tours are conducted just for a sight of the huge flowers.
Cameron Highlands hotels accommodation ranges from gorgeous colonial era Tudor houses to the usual dormitory style accommodation. If you have the budget for it, the highlands have some very fancy resorts containing within their grounds, many acres of serene landscape bordered by undulating hills. Indulge in a delicious high tea at the many English Tea rooms serving tea and scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.
